In this paper, the capabilities of X-band COSMOSkyMedrnSAR data are investigated for both wind speedrnestimation purposes and for the improvement of coastalrncirculation modeling. The data set consists of 60 X-bandrnLevel 1B Multi-Look Ground Detected ScanSARrnHugeRegion COSMO-SkyMed SAR data, gathered inrnthe Southern Tyrrhenian Sea during the summer andrnwinter seasons of 2010. Wind speed is estimated byrnmeans of a SAR wind speed retrieval based on thernazimuth cut-off procedure. Wind direction is providedrnby means of a SAR retrieval approach based on DiscreternWavelet Transform. After comparison with the providedrnground truth data, SAR-derived wind fields andrnECMWF data are used to construct a blended windrnproduct regularly sampled in both space and time. Thernresulting wind field will be used to force the PrincetonrnOcean Model, which has been implemented in arnSouthern Tyrrhenian Sea coastal area to simulate winddrivenrncostal circulation processes.
