As the national spatial data infrastructure (NSDI), different types of data like raster image and DEM, and vector GIS objects is necessary to be obtained from different sources, and necessary to be integrated and represented at different scales. For this purpose, the traditional GISs therefore have to be enhanced to provide a hybrid system environment to deal with both the raster and vector data. Since the huge amount of image data, the elaborate storage and management strategy for multi-scale and multi-type databases is quite important, and which can facilitate the data fusion analysis and multiple seamless representations. As the framework database, the integration of image and GIS can provide manifold applications, based on the orthoimage existing digital vector data can be updated, and the GIS is also the important source of prior knowledge to be introduced in an image interpretation process. The main difficulties with respect to the integration of spatial databases are just how to do the database-driven information extraction and how to realize the realistic visualization of fused information. In this paper, an initial solution and its implementation in GeoStar software are presented. After introducing the design of integrated databases of raster and vector data, the strategy of database driven GIS objects extraction is presented, and finally the dynamic and real-time 3D visualization of fused data is described.
