This paper investigates the potential of ENVISATrnASAR data for rice crop mapping in Fujian Province,rnwhere the agricultural fields are cracked. The ASARrndata with VV and HH polarization acquired betweenrntwo acquisition dates over the whole rice growthrnseason were used. The study area is located in Fuzhou,rnFujian province, China. After analysis the backscattersrnof VV and HH polarization in the two dates duringrneach rice growth season, a backscatter change indexrn(BSCI) combining the VV and HH backscatters of therntwo dates was calculated. The BSCI value of rice fieldrnis much higher than those of other land covers. Arnmethod using the BSCI was proposed, which was arnfast rice crop mapping method. The accuracy of ricernfield mapping in three rice seasons was all promisingrnhigh.
