In this paper we will present the FP7-projectrn’MarcoPolo’. The main objective of Marco Polo is tornimprove air quality monitoring, modelling andrnforecasting over China using satellite data. Within thernpreceeding DRAGON project AMFIC it was concludedrnthat modelling of air quality are hampered by thernrapidly changing emission data due to economic growthrnin China. In addition, air quality policies could notrndirectly be related to changes in emissions. Therefore,rnwithin the MarcoPolo project, the focus will be placedrnon emission estimates from space and the refinement ofrnthese emission estimates by spatial downscaling and byrnsource sector apportionment. A wide range of satelliterndata will be used from various satellite instruments tornderive emission estimates for NO_x, SO_2, PM andrnbiogenic sources. By combining these emission datarnwith known information from the ground, a newrnemission database for MarcoPolo will be constructed.rnThe improved emission inventory will be input to thernregional and local air quality models.
