At present, our Information on the global wind field,rnespecially over the Oceans and the southern hemisphere,rnis insufficient due to missing measurement data.rnHowever, it is of highest priority for numerical weatherrnforecast. Thus, the European Space Agency (ESA)rninitiated the Atmospheric Dynamics Mission ADMAeolus,rnplanning to use a satellite Doppler Lidar (lightrndetection and ranging) for measuring globally thernatmospheric wind field with high vertical resolutionrn(0.25-2 km) and accuracy (1-3 m/s). The ADM-Aeolusrnmission is currently under development and the satelliternlaunch is foreseen for 2014. For the pre-launchrnvalidation of the ADM-Aeolus measurement principlernand the calibration and validation algorithms, anrnairborne prototype of the ADM-Aeolus instrument wasrndeveloped by DLR (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- undrnRaumfahrt) and deployed in several ground andrnairborne campaigns. The most important results fromrnthese campaigns are reported in this paper.
