Breast-milk Levels of Polybrminated Diphenyl Ethers Associated with Infant Development

It has been demonstrated that the neurodevelopmental toxicity of several polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDEs) homologues may be correlated with alternation of thyroid homeostasis in animal studies. It is still unknown whether PBDEs had neurotoxic effects on infant development. It was a follow-up study to invite our participants to test infant development using Bayley-III scales when the infants were 8 month old. We collected 40 pair samples of PBDE levels in breast milk and Bayley-III scores of the offspring. The scores of cognitive development had significantly negative correlations with BDE-99 (r= -0.375, p=0.017), BDE-208 (r=-0.358, p=0.023) and BDE-209 (r=-0.419, p=0.027). Language scores had significantly negative associations with the levels of BDE-208 (r=-0.365, p=0.021). The scores of adaptive behavior were negatively correlated with BDE-207(r =- 0.321, p = 0.043). Infants exposure to PBDEs might have the negative impact on their development.
