Phosphate glasses containing Dy~(3+) ions were co-doped with copper and tin oxides, or merely tin oxide, with the purpose of investigating on the sensitizing effects of ionic copper and tin species on the luminescence of Dy~(3+) ions in the matrix. The spectroscopic properties of the glasses, which were prepared by the melt-quenching technique, were assessed by optical absorption and photoluminescence spectroscopy. The data indicated the presence of single Cu~+ ions and/or twofold-coordinated Sn centers as the copper- and tin-related luminescent species in the glasses. An enhanced Dy~(3+) ions luminescence was observed under UV excitation in the co-doped glasses as compared to a purely Dy~(3+)-doped reference. While no influence was suggested from the Cu~+ ions, the data points towards twofold-coordinated Sn centers as sensitizers of Dy~(3+) luminescence in the glass host.
