RELIEVING YACHT DESIGNERS' CHALLENGE BY INTEGRATING AZIPOD® PROPULSION AND ONBOARD DC GRID DISTRIBUTION: INCREASED SAFETY AND COMFORT, CONSIDERABLE FOOTPRINT SAVINGS (OVER 40) AND REDUCED ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT
Increased requirements for safety, comfort and environment support the use of podded propulsion and advanced power distribution with batteries and other energy storage devices. However, the challenge for the yacht designer is how to fit all new requirements, especially energy storage, into the vessel design considering the limited machinery spaces in yachts.rnABB's latest technologies relieve the yacht designers' challenge in several ways. Azipod® D propulsion integrated with Onboard DC Grid distribution not only saves a considerable amount of energy, but reduces the rating and size of onboard power equipment overall - freeing up space to incorporate energy storage. This paper highlights the advantages of Azipod D propulsion and Onboard DC Grid combination such as safety and comfort of the people onboard, energy consumption, and Polar Class notations. In addition, it demonstrates in detail how weight saving and over 40% machinery footprint saving is achieved compared to conventional AC electrical power distribution with shaftline propulsion.
