MANAGING THE MEGA-YACHT’S WASTEWATER STREAM

IMO Resolution MEPC 227(64) has changed the rules governing the use of on-board wastewater treatment plant and impacts the design and construction of mega-yachts, as the revised regulation makes some existing plant incompatible. This paper will outline the impact of MEPC 227(64) for larger PYC yachts with more than 12 passengers and discusses the limitations of various technologies and the design and technical implications of under-specifying wastewater treatment plant. Referring to case studies involving the installation of wastewater systems aboard a number of high profile mega-yacht projects, the paper will explain how designers can reduce the space required for water treatment plant without impacting treatment capacity and performance.rnThe paper will go on to explore the technical challenges faced when ACO Marine designed a wastewater treatment system to meet the limited, very narrow space aboard one particular prestigious project.
