The magnetic particles of anthropogenic origin can serve as an easily detected tracer of identification and delimitation of contaminated sites. The analysis of magnetic susceptibility map of Polish topsoil reveals existing of many areas of magnetic "hot spots" closely connected with industrial and urban areas, mostly in southern and south-western Poland. Magnetometry is a fast and cost-effective method of soil pollution screening, pointing out the magnetic "hot spots" as potential sources of soil pollution (mostly heavy metals). This method can be used as a complement and in some cases even as an alternative to geochemical methods.
