Effect of Water Supply on the Soil-Litter Interface as a Microbial Habitat

Addition of litter increases activity and biomass of soil microorganisms mainly in the soil-litter interface (detritusphere). In former investigations (GAILLARD et al. 1999, KANDELER et al. 1999) it was observed that the detritusphere is about 2 mm thick. However, in these studies soil water conditions were not varied. Therefore, our objective was to investigate the influence of water supply on the spatial dimension of the detritusphere.
