Abstract: Spatial chopping is a technique widely used in infrared(IR) astronomy to improve the signal-to-noise ratio ofweak IR sources. The W. M. Keck Ten Meter Telescope, currently the world's largest telescope, uses anactively controlled secondary mirror to perform its twoaxis spatial chopping. This 0.5 m gold plated berylliummirror must execute extremely precise motions over awide range of amplitude, frequency, duty cycle, andchop orientation. This paper describes the design, implementation, and test of the mirror drive andcontrol system. Details of the drive electromechanicaldesign, reaction cancelling system, gravityoff-loading, and operations of its unique adaptivecontrol system are presented. Laboratory test data areshown and discussed, and a short video of the mirrorsystem in operation (shown at the conference) is alsobriefly described. !0
