Coating pinhole defects produce a corrosion related problem for barrier coated steel products. Due to this it is important to be able to identify the levels of pinholes in a coating and relate this to how it will corrode. The technique of Electrogenerated Chemiluminescence (ECL) is applied to this problem and provides a useful option for detecting pinholes through the localised production of visible light. It is shown that the technique can identify pinholes in coatings which can then be related to corrosion behaviour through the use of the Scanning Vibrating Electrode Technique (SVET). Both techniques have then been applied to assess the effect of forming has on coating defect distribution and therefore the induced corrosion properties.
