This paper includes results of an experimental investigation of stress corrosion cracking (SCC) of a mild steel and a cast iron in a typical synthetic Bayer liquor (SBL). In order to ascertain experimental conditions under which the caustic SCC is the predominant mode of fracture for the given materials, slow strain rate tests (SSRT) were carried out at various combinations of strain rate and temperature in SBL and an inert environment of liquid paraffin. The mode of the SCC crack propagation and the fractographic details of the specimens tested in the two environments have been compared.
