Ternary physical protocol for MARILAN, a multiple-access ring localarea network

A design is presented for an asynchronous ternary transmissionnphysical-layer protocol for a multiple-access-ring local area networkn(MARILAN) that uses the PLAYTHROUGH data-link-layer protocol. Thenternary encoding scheme presented provides for both bit synchronizationnand simultaneous information transfer on a single pair of wires withoutnincrease in hardware complexity or bandwidth requirements. Bandwidthnrequirements for the polar return-to-zero (RZ) scheme proposednpreviously for single-pair wire links and the ternary non-RZ (NRZ)nscheme used here are analyzed and compared to each other and tonrequirements for the binary Manchester code. Test results on prototypenring interface units using this ternary transmission mechanism arenpresented. Several advantages that accrue from the use of ternary NRZnsignaling on the links of the ring are discussed
