Durability cracking (D-cracking) is a pavement distress that is widespread in the midwestern, northern, and eastern UNited States, and it is one of the predominant distresses monitored by visual inspection under the Long-STerm Pavement Performance Project (LTPP). The nondestructive procedure presented in this paper for monitoring D-cracking was found to be a good supplement for the LTPP procedure for monitoring D-cracking in the test sections. SThe procedure involves the use of the ratio of deflections at the slab edge to the deflections at the slab center, DEF_(ratio). Case studies on monitoring D-cracking in two test sections in the North Central LTPP Region are used to illustrate the use of the DEF_(ratio). This procedure may be useful to highway agencies for monitoring D-cracking progression and deterioration of joints, cracks, and shoulder edges of jointed plain concrete pavement.
