Flow motion caused by vigorous boiling/bubbling of PA6 transports clay particles through the molten polymer to the sample surface. Accumulation of clays forms a protective islands with char. For most effective FR performance, they need to cover the entire sample surface to fully shield the polymer and thus act as a thermal insulation. In order to generate such protective layer, higher clay content, network-like structure forming additives, and higher melt viscosity system might be required. Thinner clayanocomposite samples tend to have lesser FR performance than thicker samples.
