REGULATORY ACTIVITY GOVERNING BROMINATED FLAME RETARDANTS IN EUROPE AND THE U.S

After years of environmental activism and heated public debate regarding the merits and possible risks of brominated flame retardants, the European Union has enacted a ban on three brominated retardants. The ban is part of the recently enacted RoHS (Restrictions of Hazardous Substances) Directive. The ban on brominated retardants will be reviewed. The possibility of that ban being expanded to include other brominated retardants will be considered. Also, environmental activism and regulatory activity in the U.S. regarding brominated retardants will be surveyed. What is the likelihood that European restrictions on brominated retardants will be imitated in the U.S.?
