Modern Uninterruptible Power Supply Systems are proven to be very reliable, but failures still occur, and the most common point of failure is typically the support media (normally batteries) that have either been abused, are near the end of their life and/or have not been maintained as efficiently as the UPS System itself. To ensure satisfactory performance of the whole UPS system, reliability of the battery must be assured, this can only be achieved by regular monitoring and maintenance of the battery via a formal service contract and some form of Battery Monitoring. In some circumstances an alternative product may be considered, two of which will be outlined here, Flywheel Technology for a range of applications and sizes and Commercial Genset typically for 24/48VDC applications, i.e. Communications.
