Non destructive testing technology for pressure vessels has developed significantly over the last fifty years with the increasing introduction of ultrasonics, computerisation and sophisticated robotics and remote manipulators. Improvements in technology have been matched by developments in the "NDT quality infrastructure" ― the framework of systems and organisations within which NDT is executed. Both technology and infrastructure developments have recognised the increased use of NDT for in-service inspection of ageing plant. The paper gives a broad overview of the use of NDT for manufacturing and in-service inspections of pressurised equipment, focusing on vessels and pipework, and describes the NDT infrastructure as it currently exists. Comments are made on best practice and where further developments are needed.
