Noticeable Loss: A Metric for Capturing Loss Pattern for Continuous Media Applications

With the proliferation of Continuous Media (CM) applications (such as live or streamed audio and video) on the Internet, it has become important to be able to devise suitable metrics that capture their performance. One such metric identified is packet loss, which results from statistical multiplexing over-loads, missed deadilnes and other network pathologies. While work exists in literature on estiamting the packet loss ratio, little work has been done on capturing the actual loss process itself. For the smae loss ratio, CM applications perceive differnt Quality of Service (QoS) for different loss patterns. Thus, it is important to be able provide simple means of capturing the loss process for users as well as for operators.
