From the viewpoint of environmental protection, polymer electrolyte fuel cell (PEFC) cogeneration system, which contributes to the reduction of CQ_2 and NO_x emission, is drawing attention for the next-generation residential power source. In recent years, automobile manufacturers have been energetically developing PEFC for the energy source of electric vehicles on account of its good start-up performance due to relatively low operating temperature and its high power density. PEFC is also promising for residential cogeneration system combined with a small-scale natural gas fuel processor. In this review, the current status of the development of PEFC cogeneration systems for residential use including fuel processor is reported.
