Hand-Held, Compact, Disposable Gas Chromatography Device for Field Screening Methods

A temperature-programmable, disposable gas chromatography (GC) device was designed and constructed for field application and screening. The modular GC device and be readily interfaced to portable analyzers and/or detectors, and it can be easily replaced. The GC module can be thought of as a replacement of a standard laboratory GC system. It is believed that the GC module is the first of its kind where GC column temperature is programmable and consumes 8 W during heating (45 deg C/max. heating rates). The present GC device is 9x6.5x4cm, weighs 160 grams, has conventional temperature- programmign capabilities, consumes a total of 15 W of electro=ical power during a typical GC analysis, and has relatively rapid cooling rates (time constant is 36 seconds) to reduce downtime.
