The average corrosion rates of steel reinforcement with different initial surface conditions (v_(corr)) calculated from mass loss after four-year exposure in concrete were evaluated in relation to the average free corrosion potential (E_(corr)) and polarisation resistance (R_p). The corrosion of pre-rusted steel in concrete could not be evaluated reliably based on the E_(corr) value. Qualitative correlation of E_(corr) and v_(corr) was found only for machined and scaled surfaces. R_p values were in good qualitative agreement with v_(corr) for all the tested surface conditions. At polarisation resistances above 30 Ωm~2, v_(corr) values were below 2 μm/year.
