Today there exists a need for researchers, policy makers and other users to locate, explore, and exercise environmental models that may be physically distributed throughout the Internet. Unfortunately, access to these models and their interfaces is currently impeded by the lack of transportable user interfaces and the many underlying standards that exist between multiple computing platforms in use. We propose to address these problems by demonstrating an innovative client/server architecture that allows interfaces to environmental systems be executed through the use of Web-based clients. Our interface approach makes use of Java and Web-based clients as enabling technologies.
