Activated carbon fibres (ACFs) from polyaramid fibres exhibit an outstandingly homogeneous pore size distribution in the micropore range. This paper reviews recent results obtained at the authors' laboratory in this field. First, studies on the thermal decomposition of polyaramides are examined. Then, the characteristics of ACFs prepared by different methods (physical and chemical activations) are analysed, with particular focus on the porous texture of the obtained materials. Simultaneously, the use of advanced methodologies for the characterisation of microporous solids is illustrated with several examples showing their usefulness.
