Pervaporation shows its efficient performance on separating an azeotropic mixture or a liquid mixture with close boiling points. Separation of such mixtures is difficult to achieve by conventional distillation process. Hydrophilic polymers solely used or formed complex membranes with a support layer have shown attraction for using in dehydration pervaporation process. In addition to high permeation rates and high permselectivity, long-term operation stability is another issue of membrane developments. This paper presents some progress on membrane modifications and fabrications to develop high performance pervaporation dehydration membranes basing on chitosan and PTFE.
