Calcium carbonate is the chemical name for a diverse category of physically different materials. Even though there are many variations in the physical form and uses of these products, all are chemically classified as calcium carbonate. The two distinguishing classes of calcium carbonate are: ground calcium carbonate (GCC - mined from natural deposits and ground to fine sizes) and precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC - chemically synthesized at or near the desired particle size). This section focuses on the physical properties of PCC that determine its performance characteristics in paper coating.
