A STUDY OF STUDENT REACTION TO TEACHING PARALLEL AND DISTRIBUTED COMPUTER TOPICS USING A WEB PORTAL

We established a cluster computing lab at a minority serving institution to enhance education with experiential learning mode. The lab provides computing resources that support undergraduate computer science curriculum. The computing resources of the cluster are managed by a job distribution system, which allows users to upload, compile, and run their C++ or Java programs. The job distribution system evenly distributes the submitted jobs to the computing nodes of the cluster using the round robin algorithm. A case study of using this platform to teach parallel and distributed computing topics in the operating system course is presented, with the evaluation of the teaching effectiveness.
