Abstract: The Offshore Oil and Gas Industry in the North Sea hasmany requirements for 3D measurements in air andunderwater. A market audit found that the use of filmbased photogrammetry was being rejected for manyapplications because the information was not availablefast enough. A development project was set up toreplace the photographic cameras with a choice of videoof high resolution digital electronic cameras, and theanalysis system with a personal computer based imageprocessing system. This product has been in operationwith Remotely Controlled Underwater Vehicles sinceSeptember 1992. The paper deals with the ongoingdevelopment of the system, including the automation ofthe measurement process. It introduces the applicationof the system as a closed-loop control system forunderwater manipulators.!8
