The public networks have seen explosive growth in the past few years with no indication that the end is in sight. Tremendous growth in high capacity data services, coupled with advances in Dense-Wavelength Division Multiplexing technology, have led to a new model for the metropolitan network. As optical wavelength ad/drop and optical cross-connect technology evolves, the fundamental interface between equipment and between networks will migrate from the electrical domain to the optical domain.
