In hybrid Fibre-In-The-Loop architectures, the introduction of multiple wavelengths allows a more efficient use of the network infrastructure. Different service providers and/or different types of service can be accommodated in the same network, by assigning specific wavelengths (wavelength leasing) to them. Even more powerful options arise when flexible wavelength routing is introduced, i.e. by directing the wavelength channels to the Optical Network Units according to their actual traffic demands. This network reconfiguration flexibility enables the operator to accommodate unexpected changes in traffic patterns and in user population densities.
