Flame Synthesis of Nanostructures of Semiconducting Metal Oxides

Various nanostructures of semiconducting metal oxides are produced from flames, which include: zinc oxide (ZnO) nano-wires, ribbons, rods, and flowers; tungsten oxide (WO_(2.9)) nanowires; and iron oxide and copper oxide nano-wires and ribbons. The synthesis is carried out in different flame configurations at one atmospheric pressure using different metals as precursor for the corresponding nanostructures. Several of parameters affecting the process are investigated, and the growth mechanism of these nanostructures in the flame environments is discussed. Flame synthesis allows for growth of nanostructures of semiconducting metal oxides in a simple, economic, continuous, and ready-scalable manner.
