This paper explores the possibility of estimating smallscalernvector wind fields from SAR data by applyingrncertain dynamical constraints to the wind field. Thernmethod is illustrated for the case of a diverging surfacernflow field that is intended to represent a precipitationinducedrndowndraft. A simulated radar cross sectionrnmap generated from this flow field is used to reconstructrnthe wind field by choosing the wind direction at eachrnpoint so as to minimize the vorticity. The methodrnworks well for this case because the input wind fieldrnwas chosen to be irrotational. For cases in which thernvorticity is not zero, it may be possible to generalize thernmethod by applying other dynamical constraints.
