The effects of wave asymmetry and of the wave-induced Eulerian drift on the net sediment transport rate are discussed, based on a review of existing data sets. Above rippled beds, these two effects oppose one another. According to some new hydrodynamical results, the wave-induced Eulerian drift above ripples consists of a strong onshore jet near the bed, with a reversal in the direction of drift occuring in the outer boundary layer flow. Here, the interaction between the positive mean flo vorticity and ejected vortieces is proposed as an important mechanism influencing the net transport rate.
