All fossil fuel fired boilers are designed to burn a specific type of fuel.rnFurnace size increases dramatically as heating values of fuels decrease.rnHeating surface are sized, positioned, and spaced according to the fuelrnand ash characteristics. Gas fired units are smaller, since the cleanlinessrnof gas allows for closer spacing of assemblies and the higher heatingrnvalue of the fuel means less fuel fired for the required heat release. Coalrnfired units must be larger to allow wider spacing of assemblies andrngreater volume for burning more fuel for the same heat release. Coalrnquality has perhaps the greatest affect of all the factors on boilerrnefficiency and other plant equipment. Boilers are designed to burn arngiven fuel within a specified optimum range of composition to meetrnperformance guarantees. Any variation from that composition willrnaffect the operation and performance, notably capacity, efficiency,rnreliability, availability and maintenance. Therefore it is very importantrnto know its combustion characteristics and to determine how the fuelrnswitch will affect boiler performance and other plant equipment. Thisrnreport examine the experience of Suralaya coal fired power plant whenrnfiring out-of design coals.
