Development of Synthesis Gas Production Technology Using 3 T/D Scale Coal Gasification System

A Synthesis gas producing facility that consists of pulverized coalrnfeeding/gasification and hot gas clean-up system has been developed and tested forrnnine different coals, with the primary goal of providing coal selection guidelines forrnthe future IGCC facilities in Korea. The coal gasifier of 3 ton/day (T/D) scale wasrnentrained-bed slagging type and was operated normally in the temperature range ofrn1,400~1,450 ℃, 8~10 bar (max. 30 bar) pressure. The obtained composition ofrnsynthesis gas was 63~68% of CO, 20~25% of H2, 7~12% of CO2 in the dry, N2-freernbasis. The 95~99% of carbon of the suitable coal was converted to synthesis gas andrnthe ash was converted into non-leaching slag.rnThrough the more than eight years of experimental study, many facilities werernupgraded in the areas such as the pulverized coal pneumatic feeding, synthesis gasrnproduction, and hot gas clean-up. For the reliability test of the coal gasificationrnsystem, one month continuous operation was proceeded while yielding thernproduction of 100~200 Nm 3 /hr synthesis gas. This paper describes the coalrngasification characteristics and the latest operational results of the 3 T/D gasificationrnfacility in Korea.
