UK Power Networks is trialling Contingency Analysis on the distribution network in coordination with the transmission network through the Kent Active Network Management (KASM) project. The KASM project is funded by the Great Britain (GB) regulators' Office of Gas and Electricity Markets (Ofgem) Low Carbon Networks Fund [1]. The project commenced in January 2015 and will conclude in December 2017. The project aims to optimise the efficient utilisation of the distribution network and potentially release capacity to connect Distributed Generation (DG) onto constrained parts of the network. The project is currently in development stage and will enter into trial phase in 2017. This paper provides (1) a brief outline of the network problem along with how the Contingency Analysis solution is to be deployed, and focuses on (2) the solution logical design architecture, (3) experiences gained by UK Power Networks so far - the opportunities, challenges, and lessons learnt.
