In the past the grid smartness was concentrated in a few nodes of the MV distribution grid; to enable Smart Grids development the presence of broadly distributed smartness is a must, and in consequence the installation of distributed measurement by means of sensors is strictly necessary. After a general introduction about Smart Grids implications on the MV grid development, the Enel Distribuzione Smart Grids electronic device, its functionalities and the consequent measurement requirements are introduced in the first part of the paper.rnIf the installation of distributed measurement can be easily performed for new MV equipments, it’s not as easy for retrofit of existing installations. The possible solutions identified by Enel Distribuzione for retrofit different MV switchboard applications are shown in the second part of the paper.rnA basic consideration for the system architecture is the choice between full integration of electronics and sensors or separating the two parts. The Enel Distribuzione experience on this topic and a pros-cons evaluation are described in the third part of the paper, together with a brief description of the first pilot installations and tests.
