Research aimed at establishing criteria for lighting is discussed in relation to cognitive theory, particularly the notion of the behavioural setting. This leads to a hypothesis that expectations about room brightness are related to people's prior experience of similar places and that these are predominantly of daylit interiors. The hypothesis is supported by results from previous subjective experiments in lighting and allied topics. If justified, it would provide a framework for lighting design criteria.
