The preliminary design of Beijing Proton Therapy Synchrotron, a branch subject researching the proton therapy facility within the "State Climb Plan B",was started from May, 1995.The layout and some parameters are presented in this paper. The synchrotron, which is a kind of strong focusing ,seperated function proton synchrotron, consists of 2 × 3 sections with two long straight sections of 3.7m, four short straight sections of 3.0m. The injector is a radio frequency quadrupole (RFQ), which accelerates protons to 3.5MeV. The beam energy extracted from the synchrotron can be adjusted from 70MeV to 200MeV. The maximum average output current is 5-10nA when the pulse repetition frequency is 2Hz.. Both the slow extraction ( ~ 0.5s) and the fast extraction are considered. The fast extraction will be discussed in this report, and the slow extraction is also being studied in a planned way. Three treatment rooms and one experimental room are planned.
