In 2002 the Swedish Rescue Services Agency (SRSA) took over responsibility for the Swedish Safety Promotion Programme (SSPP) from the Swedish National Institute of Public Health. The programme was established in 1987, and has during its 15 years developed a method for supporting local injury prevention and safety promotion work around the country. Injuries as a result of incidents, accidents and violent acts are a major public health problem - in Sweden and globally. The risk of injury is present in all environments frequented by people. And all age groups are at risk in various ways. The most common cause of death in Sweden up to age 45 is as a result of injuries sustained. But death due to injury is also commonplace among other age groups. The aim of the SSPP is to assist with injury prevention work and to promote safety and security in the community in accordance with the WHO's global injury prevention and safety promotion programme. The SSPP works on a national level based on cooperation between authorities, scientific institutions, county councils and municipalities, and voluntary organisations and local practitioners.
