Corrosion can be reasonably predicted by following the steps in the corrosion based design approach (CBDA). This approach provides an orderly method for identifying what aspects should be considered in predicting and assessing the occurrence of corrosion. Implementing the CBDA can be approached by developing specific lists of consideration and assuring that they are properly evaluated. Such lists do not require that designers or materials engineers understand the details of the entries, but such lists identify where attention should be given by someone in order to produce a reliable product. This discussion emphasizes that often used criteria such as nominal environments and applied stresses do not provide sufficient bases for predicting performance. For environments, attention must be given to chemistries that actually occur on surfaces rather than only the bulk. Such local concentrations may be quite different from those in the bulk environment. For stresses, the nominal calculations for bending, pressure, and thermal stresses are not adequate and are often misleading. Stresses from residual sources and expansion of oxides are more often important to producing stress corrosion cracking phenomena. The CBDA can be applied directly to predicting the performance of pipelines and refineries as well as power production such as nuclear plants.
