Preparation and Characterization of Phenolic Resins Modified by Persimmon Tannin

Phenolic resins used for wood adhesives have been modified with persimmon tannin under oxalic acid catalyst conditions for reduction of free phenol content in the resins. Orthogonal design experiment was adopted to obtain optimal conditions. Compression-shear strength and content of free phenol were the research indexes to evaluate the resins. The compression-shear strength was tested by universal material testing machine, and content of free phenol was measured by ultra-violet spectrometer using standard curve method. Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) was employed to show the presence of persimmon tannin in the modified resins. Compared with non-modified phenolic resins, compression-shear strength of the modified resin was at most 2.47MPa; content of free phenol was reduced to 0.60% at optimal condition. Furthermore, the modified phenolic resin could be environment-friendly adhesive in application.
