Recent Progress in Dye-sensitized Solar Cells based on Titania

As global warming and environmental pollution become serious, we face the urgent necessity to develope renewable energy. Solar energy is a promising green energy, however, conventional silicon solar cells can not be used widely due to its high costs and shortfall of raw materials. In order to meet the demands of our society, new types of solar cells must be developed. Dye-sensitized solar cell (DSC) is a new type of photovoltaic cell. Since 1991, it has been attracting much attention because of its high energy conversion efficiency and low cost of production. In order to Commercialize DSCs successfully, much research have been done so far.In this paper, the recent progress in the field of dye-sensitized solar cell based on nanostructured TiO2 is reviewed. In particular, we introduce the current development of the new sensitizer and novel tandem DSCs, as well as the recent progress in commercialization of the DSCs. Lastly the promising prospect of DSCs is presented.
