In this study, a new composite flocculants was prepared from polyferric chloride (PFC) and polydimethyldiallylammonium chloride (PDMDAAC). The flocculation efficiency of PFC-PDMDAAC for treating surface water or wastewater samples was compared with that of PFC. Experiments were conducted to analyze the impact of basicity (B) of PFC and intrinsic viscosity (η) of PDMDAAC in PFC-PDMDAAC on the flocculation efficiency. The results showed that for water from surface water and wastewater, PFC-PDMDAAC produced the higher flocculation efficiency than PFC and PDMDAAC. The optimal B of PFC in PFC-PDMDAAC is 0.5 in our study. The optimal η of PDMDAAC in PFC-PDMDAAC is different for treating different water sample. The flocculation efficiency of PFC-PDMDAAC with η= 1.21dL g -1 is the highest for treating water sample of Wohu Reservoir, textile industry wastewater and papermaking intermediate wastewater, while the flocculation efficiency of PFC-PDMDAAC with η = 0.72 dL g -1 is the highest for treating water sample of Yellow River.
