In a strait where geometric characteristics enhance vortex pairing and stretching,strong vortexes can be observed in a quite stable manner. In this paper vortexbehavior in the wake of a flat plate set up perpendicular to the flow is studied by flowvisualization and velocity measurements. The experiments are conducted in twoboundary conditions, i.e. a rectangular channel and a rectangular channel with Ushapedshoal around the flat plate. The results show that vertical stretching of vortexis observed in the latter case, not in the former case. The results also indicate thatsecondary flow structure brought by the bottom configuration strongly affects thelocal behavior of the vortexes, especially in the developing process.
