摘要

Optimum and reliable performance of stave bearing is critical to ship mission. While composite stave bearing works well in most encountered by submarine propeller-shaft systems, discovery of extensive damages to the bearing in the USS Ronald Reagan during routine hull inspection highlighted underlying risks of operation without frequent or real-time inspection. Propeller bearing maintenance is also a concern in the Ohio Replacement Program (ORP) as well. In past, stave bearings have experienced excessive wear due to marine growth as was observed in 688 class submarines. Stave type and partial arc bearings have a history of failing when exposed to inadequate cooling and in absence of forced water cooling.
