The main objective of this research program is to develop general power system models related to the integration of large wind power farms with hydro based electricity network. Our modelling approach starts from an existing planning model: a medium-term generation model used by Hydro-Quebec for reservoir management. The model is a mathematical program that maximizes a final storage reward function to which is added revenues and costs related to electricity purchased or sold. Constraints are mainly related to flow conservation in the hydro network as well as in the electric network. The model is deterministic.This paper presents some conclusions about the wind performance in an hydro based system. Cases related to the Hydro-Quebec network are presented. Among results, the concept hydro/wind appears as an overall promising strategy for Canada if support to wind industry is examined.
