Surveillance Improvements at a Large Canadian Dam

Increased surveillance was put in place at BC Hydro's Bennett Dam, one of the largest dams in Canada, after two sinkholes were identified in the dam in mid 1996. This paper describes the surveillance and instrumentation improvements that started during the 1996/7 sinkhole rehabilitation program and are ongoing at the dam. Instruments and techniques put in place to improve monitoring will be described including systems for seepage monitoring, climate monitoring, datalogging and automating weirs and piezometers, water quality monitoring, displacement monitoring, video monitoring, thermal monitoring, inspections and inspection techniques and equipment and winterization of monitoring equipment. Techniques to improve the performance monitoring and instrument results checking will be detailed. The Surveillance Response Plan and Long Term Monitoring Plans developed for the dam will be described as well as their relationship to the ongoing surveillance.
